The Power of Training: Why It Matters for Long-Term Business Success

Welcome to the Insurance Training HQ newsletter.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing why quality training, in any organization, is so important to long-term business success. While my work is rooted in the Medicare insurance industry, the principles I’ll be discussing apply to any business that relies on people to perform consistently, compliantly, and confidently.

If you’re an agency leader who:

  • Doesn’t have a dedicated training team

  • Has a team but isn’t seeing the performance results you expected

  • Has training in place but feels there’s room for improvement

These upcoming articles are for you.

💡The Moment I Realized the Power of Training

For me, the importance of training became clear when I was first starting out as a licensed insurance agent.
(And no, I won’t be dropping any company names here. 😅)

I remember passing my insurance exam, completing AHIP, landing a role, and showing up for onboarding. The training experience consisted of an introduction to company systems and what amounted to about an hour or two of onboarding.

After that, the message was essentially, “Alright! Let’s make it happen. Hop on the phones.”

On paper, I had support. I had access to an experienced sales manager and teammates who were willing to help. But in practice, it felt overwhelming. Like being thrown into the deep end without a life jacket.

Here’s what I was missing:

  • Clear product knowledge

  • A true understanding of company systems

  • Confidence in knowing what was right versus wrong, especially from a compliance standpoint

And in Medicare, compliance is critical.

At the time, I didn’t even realize how much training, support, or coaching I truly needed, because I didn’t yet know what I didn’t know.

About two weeks in, I had to admit something to myself, I didn’t have this, and I needed help if I was going to make it.

Eventually, I left that organization. Not because of the people, but because there wasn’t enough structure or ongoing training support in place to help new agents succeed.

Looking back, it wasn’t a lack of effort on my part. It was a lack of understanding around the power of training.

🎯Why Structured Training Changes Everything

When organizations invest in professional, structured training, everything changes.

A well-run training department does far more than deliver information. It:

  1. Closes knowledge gaps

  2. Builds confidence

  3. Accelerates early performance

  4. Ensures proper system knowledge

  5. Reinforces compliance standards

  6. Improves policy retention rates

Training provides structure where uncertainty exists and consistency where variability creates risk.

And this isn’t just anecdotal from my experience.

Companies that invest in training and education programs see, on average:

  • 24% higher profit margins

  • Up to a 21% increase in productivity and profitability

These results reinforce an important truth:
Training isn’t a cost center — it’s a growth strategy.

🧗Training as a Long-Term Business Strategy

Organizations that treat training as a one-time onboarding event often struggle with:

  • Longer ramp-up periods

  • Higher turnover

  • Inconsistent performance

  • Increased compliance risk

  • Higher rapid disenrollment rates &

On the other hand, organizations that build ongoing training ecosystems create teams that are more confident, more compliant, and more capable of delivering consistent results.

Training is not about checking a box. It’s about building a foundation that supports both individual performance and organizational success.
